How to Make Your Own Natural & Summer Scented Laundry Detergent

*This blog post is part of a sponsored partnership with Samsung Home Appliances

The last few weeks of summer are up on us, and if you are anything like me - you want to stretch it out forever! One way to prolong the feeling for me is to have fresh and summery smelling laundry. After all, we do spent quite a fair bit washing clothes, so why not make it smell like Summer!

In my previous laundry room-reveal and -hack blog post, a few months back "Good Clean Fun! Laundry room reveal & smart laundry hacks (if I may say so)", I described how I am using white distilled vinegar to soften (and scent) my laundry instead of store-bought products. Quick review: I am still doing that and won't go back on it. Now I upped my game, as previously hinted on, and also replace the store-bought powder based laundry deterrent with a 3-ingredient mix, made at home.

The fun thing is that those 3 ingredients can be found in most bigger supermarkets or health stores, nothing fancy and yet so much better for the environment, your laundry and family. You will be avoiding harsh chemicals, artificial colours and fragrances.

An important side note to add is, that this mixture is low-sudsing laundry detergent, perfect for high efficiency and automatic washing machines. What is a high efficiency washing machine? One that it optimized to use as little water as possible, to get the job done! Less water = less costs, but it also means that there is 'less time' to dissolve washing detergent, hence the importance of low-sudsing or quick dissolving products. Our Samsung washing machine/ dryer is a high efficiency machine that can even 'wash' without water using an air-washing function to remove unpleasant odors - pretty cool, right?

Homemade powdered laundry detergent?

(makes approx 1kg of laundry detergent)

  • 1 Cup (approx 500g) of Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 1 Cup (approx 500g) of Soda Crystals (Natriumcarbonat)
  • 1/2 Cup (approx 200g) of soap flakes or 1 bar of natural soap
  • Add on: Essential oils to make it summery/ seasonal scents

There is no special science behind this, you only have to mix all ingredients and give it a good shake.

I used my three favorite essential oils to give our laundry detergent a fresh, fruity and summery smell: OnGuard (a mix of wild orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary), Lemon and Cederwood. I added 10 drops of each to the 1kg batch.

For a real dirty batch of laundry and full machine, I am using a 1/2 Cup of detergent and for half of that only 1/4 Cup. So with one batch of this you get about 40 full washes out of that. Not too bad right?

I also give a quick recap on my liquid, non-artificial laundry softener, in case you haven't read my previous blog post on this.

Homemade fabric softener:

  • 3 cups of Distilled White Vinegar
  • 15 drops of essential oils

'It definitely does feel good to think more environmentally friendly and start removing toxins from every day products.
